This Week I've Been Mostly...

Tähän viikkoon on mahtunut monenlaista, joten lähdetään tästä päivästä ja mennään taaksepäin. Olin tänään Tiinan kanssa kuvaamassa samaisessa paikassa, jossa olimme syksyllä. Nyt paikka ja tunnelma oli todella erilainen, kun lumi peitti maan. Pakkasta ei ollut enää kuin asteen verran, joten pärjäsimme suht hyvin paleltumatta. Tein myös yhden kauneimmista meikeistä tätä kuvausta varten.

Tässä epävirallinen räpsy vaatetuksesta. Oli aika hulppeaa tarpoa tuolla lumihangessa pitkän laahuksen kanssa. Virallisia kuvia siis tulossa.

Perjantina Stockmannin -60% alet saivat mopon karkaamaan käsistä. Tässä tulos: 3 hajuvesipakkausta (ja teki todella tiukkaa, ettei mukaan lähtenyt toista mokomaa), BeautyBlender-pakkaus, L'Orealin hoitoaine ja Tangle Teezer. Hintaa ei jäänyt juuri mitään.

Olen ehkä ohimennen kirjoittanut, että olen viime syyskuusta asti käynyt kuntosalilla, koska fysioterapeuttini suositteli. En ole koskaan nauttinut liikunnasta, enkä pidä siitä vieläkään. Pakollinen paha, jota on tehtävä, jotta kroppa ei hajoaisi. Viikon päästä aloitan ryhmätreenauksen, johon ilmottauduin keskiviikkona. Katsotaan, miten rankkaa tuosta tulee. Oma ongelmani on oikeassa polvessa, josta huonojen työasentojen vuoksi on kulunut rusto. En olisi uskonut, että ompelijalla menee ensiksi polvi. Voin kertoa, että tuo ei ole kauhean kivaa. Vaiva ei koskaan parane, mutta esim. reisilihasten vahvistaminen auttaa polvea. Mutta hyvinkin pieni liikarasitus tai virheliike tekee taas hallaa ja välillä joudun pitämään lepopäiviä, kun polvi on kipeä ja turvonnut.

Salikuvia ette joudu koskaan katselemaan. ;) En tykkää salilla siitäkään, että aamuisin ohjatun tunnin jälkeen on kauhea kiire käydä suihkussa ja meikata työpäivää varten. Olen sen verran hidas, että 30min. tekee aika tiukkaa. Käyn silti mieluummin aamuisin kuin iltaisin liikkumassa, koska päivät venyvät ihan liian pitkiksi.

Sitten sain taas pitkästä aikaa inspiraation katsoa uutta tv-sarjaa, kun törmäsin Versailles -sarjaan. Katsoin sarjan 10 jaksoa 5 päivässä. Sarjassa seurataan Aurinkokuninkaan eli Louis XIV:n hovia ja Versailles'n muutosta metsästysmajasta palatsiksi ja itse sarja on kuvattu Versailles'n hovissa. Sarja on tietysti täynnä juonitteluja, pukuloistoa, salamurhia ja ihmissuhdekiemuroita. 10 jaksoa tuli katseltua todella nopeasti ja odottelen innolla toista kautta.

Parfyymi Perjantai -sarja saa jatkoa taas tulevalla viikolla. Tuoksuista kirjoittaminen ei lopu ihan hetkessä kesken. :)

This week has been quite a busy one. Today I went to take photos with Tiina to the place we were once before. It looked so beautiful with all that snow and it wasn't too cold. 

Then I got carried away during winter sales. I just couldn't resist perfumes on -60% discount. I'm amazed I didn't buy more.

Then I binge-watched first season of new tv series 'Versailles'. I'm pretty hooked. Pretty people, murders, plotting and complicated relationships.

TV Geek, Part 6: Spartacus (2010-2013)

Tätä sarjaa en suosittele kellekään heikkohermoiselle, tämä ei ole suotta K-18. Spartacus on uskomattoman väkivaltainen sarja ja täynnä alastomuutta ja seksiä. Ja silti (siksi) minä pidän sarjasta. Sarjan juoni on mielenkiintoinen ja monet hahmot ovat moniulotteisia ja kiinnostavia. Toki sarjassa riittää myös silmänruokaa joka lähtöön. ;) En pistä pahakseni, että mieskroppaakin esineellistetään välillä (tätä sarjaa olisi ollut aika jännä olla puvustamassa).

Crixus (Manu Bennett)

Myönnän, että aluksi sarja ei tehnyt vaikutusta (ensimmäinen reaktio oli, että tämä on huono '300' -elokuvan kopio), mutta uusi yritys pari vuotta myöhemmin koukutti pahasti, enkä olisi halunnut sarjan loppuvan. Sarja seuraa Spartacus -tarinaa melko uskollisesti (totta kai taiteellisia vapauksia on otettu) ja monet sarjan hahmot ovat suoraan historiasta. Lyhykäisyydessään sarja seuraa Spartacuksen nousua gladiaattorista orjakapinallisten johtajaksi.

Gannicus (Dustin Clare)

Olen miettinyt pitkään tästä sarjasta kirjoittamista, mutta en edelleenkään tiedä, mitä tästä pitäisi kirjoittaa. Sarjan verisyys ja alastomuudella mässäily inhottavat varmasti monia. Enkä tiedä, kenelle tätä suosittelisin. En itse pidä ihan hirveän paljon historiallisista sarjoista tai elokuvista. Muinainen Rooma ei ole ykkössuosikkini. Silti tässä sarjassa on jotain inhimillisen kieroutunutta ja kiinnostavaa. Ehkä tässä on jotain samaa kuin HBO:n Kylmä Rinki -sarjassa, jossa on paljon raakaa väkivaltaa ja hyvin miehinen ympäristö. Tosin kaiken testosteronin vastapainona sarjasta löytyy myös todella voimakkaita naishahmoja.

Spartacus is a TV show that didn't convince me when I saw the first episode. I thought it was a bad '300' movie copy. I found this show again 2 years ago and realized how good it really was. Sure, this must be the most violent TV show there is with extra nudity and sex, but it's the characters that kept me coming back. Most of them felt really one dimensional at first, but then we got to know them better and care for them. 

The show follows Spartacus' story quite truthfully and many of the characters have really existed. 
But I'm not sure to whom I'd recommend this show. I'm not the biggest fan of historical shows, but there's something genuinely interesting and touching about this. Ok, and I'm not against the half naked male bodies either. ;) And although this show is full of testosterone there are plenty of very strong female characters in the mix.

TV Geek, Part 5: Kings (2009)

Palataan taas pitkästä aikaa television ihmeelliseen maailmaan. Löysin tämän Kings -minisarjan aika vahingossa pari vuotta sitten, kun se tuli AVA:lta. Onneksi löysin, sillä se on jäänyt jonnekin aivojeni syövereihin mietityttämään. Tilasin joulun alla sarjan DVD-boksin Amazon.comista ja katsoin hetki sitten jaksot uudestaan.

Kings tapahtuu meidän ajassamme, mutta muuten kuvitteellisessa Gilboan valtiossa, joka on sodassa vierusmaan Gathin kanssa. Sarja seuraa kuningasperheen koettelemuksia ja nuoren sotilaan David Shepherdin nousua armeijan riveistä vastentahtoiseksi sankariksi ja lopulta kuninkaan neuvonantajaksi ja poliittiseksi pelinappulaksi. Sarja on aihepiiriltään hyvin raamatullinen olematta kuitenkaan uskonnollinen. David käy alussa kirjaimellisesti taistelua Goljatin kanssa ja viitteitä raamatun tarinoihin riittää. Yleensä tämä on minulle iso miinus, mutta Kings osaa hyödyntää tätä hyvin.

Tämän sarjan lopettaminen yhden kauden jälkeen on aivan huutava vääryys. Ensimmäisessä kaudessa on 12 jaksoa, joissa ei ole tyhjiä hetkiä. Kaikki näyttelijät ovat huikeita rooleissaan. Kaikilla hahmoilla on omat sisäiset demoninsa, jotkut pärjäävät taistelussa paremmin kuin toiset. Tässä ei ole mustavalkoisia hahmoja; yhtenä hetkenä vihaat esim. kuningasta, mutta hetken päästä tunnetkin sympatiaa. Tämä on juttu, jota rakastan sarjoissa ja elokuvissa; usein tällaisia hahmoja vaan pelätään näyttää. Oikeastaan Kingsin myötä löysin Sebastian Stanin, joka sarjassa näyttelee kuninkaan poikaa Jack Benjaminia. Jack on homo, mutta tämä on asia, jota kunigaspari ei pysty sulattamaan. Aihe on edelleen ajankohtainen ja aiheen käsittely on sarjassa välillä todella raadollista katsottavaa.

Kings on melko vakava sarja, mutta siitä löytyy myös yllättävää huumoria. Aihe on poliittinen, mutta kaiken takana on inhimilliset tunteet ja halut. Kingsin tunnelma on erikoinen; se tuntuu yhtä aikaa hyvin tutulta ja samalla täysin vieraalta. Suosittelen tutustumaan tähän, jos vaan on mahdollisuus.

Kings is a wonderful mini series that NBC cancelled after one season. Such a shame. 
The show takes place in our time, but in an alternate reality, in a kingdom called Gilboa. The show follows the royal family and a soldier called David Shepherd. David literally confronts Goliath at the beginning and as result becomes a reluctant hero and finds his way into the court. Themes in Kings are quite biblical and that's something that usually doesn't appeal to me, but somehow they've made it work. So the show is biblical, but not religious. 

I love all the actors in Kings. All the characters have their inner demons, some win their battles some don't. The characters are far from black and white, which I love. You can hate someone and in the next moment feel sympathy. I "found" Sebastian Stan through Kings. He plays king's son Jack Benjamin. Jack is gay and his parents just can't handle the crown prince to be anything but "normal". The subject is still relevant and the way it's handled in Kings makes me want to cry some times.

Kings is quite serious show, but it has its lighter moments. It's political, but under all that we have human needs, relationships and feelings. The atmosphere is weird, it's both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. I highly recommend this if you have the possibility to watch. I bought my DVD box from amazon.com after seeing this on TV couple of years ago.  

TV Geek, Part 4: Generation Kill (2008)

HBO:n tuottama minisarja 'Generation Kill' alkaa uusintana tänään pe 6.4. klo 23.15 YLE2, joten ajattelin kirjoittaa siitä. Sarja teki minuun suuren vaikutuksen, kun näin sen muutama vuosi sitten. Sarja kertoo näin lyhykäisyydessään Yhdysvaltain merijalkaväen tiedustelupataljoonasta Irakin sodassa vuonna 2003. Sarja perustuu Rolling Stone -lehden kolumnistin Evan Wrightin kirjoittamaan kirjaan. Ei kuulosta kiinnostavalta, vai? Noh, ei minustakaan alunperin. Kunnes satuin vahingossa näkemään ensimmäisen jakson ja sitten olinkin koukussa.

HBO's mini series Generation Kill made a huge impression on me when I first saw it couple of years ago. In short, it's about The 1st Recon Marines in Iraq in 2003. It's based on Evan Wright's book, who's a columnist in Rolling Stone magazine. Doesn't sound that interesting, eh? I thought so too. Until I saw the first episode by accident and then I was hooked.

Generation Kill kuvaa todella onistuneesti nykysodankäynnin järjettömyyttä. Sarja perustuu hyvin pitkälle tositapahtumiin, joten välillä ruutua tuijottaa täysin epäuskoisena. Sarjan näyttelijät tekevät huimat suoritukset ja välillä unohtaa katsovansa "vain" tv-sarjaa. Yhtä pääosaa esittää True Bloodin myötä kuuluisuuteen noussut ruotsalainen näyttelijä Alexander Skarsgård. Aluksi sarjan seuraaminen oli melko työlästä, koska sotilastermistö ei ole tuttua ja hahmoja on paljon (menivät helposti sekaisin, koska melkein kaikilla on lempinimet ja sotilasarvot). Mutta varsin värikäs ja hersyvä dialogi ja kielenkäyttö (näin kauniisti sanottuna) pitävät silti tiukasti otteessaan.

Generation Kill shows scarily well the insanity of modern warfare. It's mostly based on real happenings and from time to time you cannot believe what you're seeing on TV. The actors are doing awesome job and you forget that it's "only" tv show you're watching. One lead actor is Alexander Skarsgård who's  now known for his role in True Blood. At first this show was quite hard to follow 'cause I don't know anything about military terms and there're so many actors (I got really confused at first). But very colorful dialogue (to put it nicely) keeps you hooked.

Suosittelen tätä sarjaa aina kaikille. Sen katsominen tekee välillä pahaa ja välillä saa nauraa kippurassa. Sarja ei anna suoria vastauksia, vaan antaa katsojan tehdä omat johtopäätökset. Ja helppoja vastauksia ei ole. Olen melkein ihmeissäni, että tällainen sarja on saatu tehdä, koska se ei anna mitenkään kaunista kuvaa Usa:n sotatoimista. Olen katsonut sarjan 4 tai 5 kertaa ja edelleen siitä löytyy jotain uutta joka kerta.

I recommend this show to everyone. It can be really hard to watch sometimes and sometimes you laugh your ass off. It doesn't give you answers, you need to make your own conclusions. And there are no easy answers. I'm almost surprised that show like this is out there 'cause it doesn't give very nice picture of The US military and how it works.  I've watched this show 4 or 5 times already and I still find new things every time.

TV Geek, Part 3: Supernatural (2005 -)

"Saving people, hunting things. Family business."

  

(In English only.) If I made a top 10 of my favorite TV shows, this would be number 1. I like pretty much everything about 'Supernatural', the writing, the actors, the music... Although I remember when it started I thought it would be yet another stupid teen-horror-show. I'm so glad I was wrong. Season 7 is about to start 23th of September, so it's time to talk about this show. (We've only had 4 seasons so far in Finland, so I'll try to keep this post spoiler free from season 4->.) Oh boy, this is going to be hard...

I'm pretty sure many of you know this show and probably something about its plot. It started with two brothers on the road, hunting scary things and looking for their father. Well, I don't even have to say that it's so much more than that. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) have fought demons, ghouls, vampires, werewolves, witches, giant teddy bears, ghosts, you name it. The show mixes horror, drama, comedy and mystery so well. I've laughed, cried, been scared... I'd like to write dozens of funny quotes from the show and post dozens of pictures from the episodes. But I guess you need to see it for yourself to get how awesome this show is.

We've come a long way since season 1. Most dramatic plot line (in my opinion) has been Dean's deal with a demon where he sold his soul and got one year to live to keep Sam alive. It really kicked things in motion. The show was quite daring and Dean actually went to Hell when his time was up. Which gave us a new major plot line and in the first episode of season 4 we meet yet another supernatural being, angel Castiel. It's no surprise that angels are not exactly what you would expect.

The show has a lot of wonderful characters, but quite too often they end up dead. Supernatural starts be famous for killing everyone who visits the show. Their uncle Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) is one of the rare survivors and life saving father figure to the boys. And family is what keeps the boys fighting. And of course their car '67 Chevy Impala gets honorable mention. The car is basically their home and it turns out to be more important than anyone would've thought of. She's Dean's baby and she truly is gorgeous.

It's so hard to write about something you really love. I could get all fangirly and rant about little details that very few even notices (like how Impala gradually gets dirtier when Dean is distressed or how the color green is used in the background when the boys are in danger). I could rant how pretty the boys are (yes, I watch it for the plot!!) or how funny, fantastic and surreal actor Misha Collins is in real life (for example, he ran 80 km in one day for charity and his Twitter is just crazy).

TV Geek, Part 2 - OZ - Kylmä Rinki (1997-2003)

Toinen osa TV Geek postauksistani on niin kaukana kaikesta tyttömäisestä ja hömpästä kuin vain pystyy. OZ - Kylmä Rinki on HBO:n tuottama todella karu, väkivaltainen, upeasti kirjoitettu ja näytelty vankilaan sijoittuva TV-sarja. Lähtökohta ei kuulosta mitenkään lupaavalta, mutta kyseessä on mielestäni yksi kaikkien aikojen parhaista sarjoista. Sitä ei ole helppo katsoa, eikä se ole tarkoituskaan. Se haastaa katsojan miettimään omia moraalikäsityksiä. Ja syy, miksi kirjoitan tästä nyt, on myös se, että Nelonen aloittaa näyttämään sarjan alusta 5.8. klo 23.50. Katsokaa! (Tosin en silti suosittele ihan herkimmille.)

This second part of my TV Geek posts is as far away from all things girly as can be. 'OZ' is HBO's rough and brutal prison TV show, which is amazingly well written and played. This still doesn't sound too convincing, but OZ is one of the best TV shows ever made, in my opinion. It can be very hard to watch and that's the point. This show challenges the viewer to make their own decisions and choose their own morale. Watch this! (Although, be cautious if you're sensitive.)

Tästä sarjasta on todella vaikea kirjoittaa, koska joka jaksossa on oma juonikuvionsa ja osa juonista jatkuu läpi koko sarjan. Kuuden kauden aikana sarja tutustuttaa katsojan liutaan kaikista vaarallisimpia vankeja, jotka ovat joutuneet Oswald State Maximum Security -vankilaan (lyhennettynä siis OZ)  mitä erilaisemmista rikoksista. Jokaisella on oma osansa ja monen elämä päättyy hyvinkin lyhyeen ennen loppua. Vankien ja muiden hahmojen kirjo on niin valtava, että niistä en sen enempää kirjoita. Heistä kaikki ovat ristiriitaisia ja monitahoisia, kuten oikeassakin elämässä. Joidenkin kohtalot kiinnostavat eniten ja sitä päätyy tuntemaan sympatiaa hahmoja kohtaan, vaikka heidän tekemänsä rikokset olisivatkin pahoja. Ja onhan tässä sarjassa myös silmäkarkkia katsojille; en nimittäin ole missään muussa sarjassa nähnyt yhtä paljon alastoman miesvartalon kuvausta. ;) Mutta vakavasti puhuen mikään muu sarja ei ole herättänyt niin vahvoja tunnekuohuja puoleen ja toiseen. Tämä sarja jää mieleen kummittelemaan.

It's really hard to write about this show, because every episode has it's own plot and plots carry through the whole show. During the 6 seasons we get to know a lot of most dangerous prisoners who are brought to Oswald State Maximum Security Prison (OZ for short) for various crimes. They all have their part to play and many lives are lost before the end. There are too many prisoners and other characters to write about  here. All of them are complex, like in real life. You will end up liking and feeling sympathy for some of the characters more than others (no matter what their crimes are). But there's also eye candy for the viewers; I've never seen that much male nudity in any other show so far. ;) But seriously speaking no other show has made such a lasting impression on me. I've went through series of emotions in such short time. This one will stay with you.

TV Geek, Part 1: Sherlock (2010 -)

Seuraan melko monia tv-sarjoja ja osasta niistä on tullut minulle todella tärkeitä. Ajattelin aina silloin tällöin tehdä postauksen yhdestä tällaisesta sarjasta. Toivottavasti näistä on joillekin lukioille iloa. :)

I follow quite a few TV shows and some of them have become very dear and important to me. I decided to do these posts every once in a while about them. I hope some of you will find these entertaining. :)

Sherlock & Dr. Watson (pic: The Book Doula) 

Ensimmäisenä vuorossa Sherlock Holmes, joka on kokenut kaksi suurempaa päivitystä näin 2000-luvulla. Ensin Guy Ritchie ohjasi vuonna 2009 toimintapainotteisen elokuvan, jonka pääosissa nähtiin Robert Downey Jr. ja Jude Law (jatko-osa on jo tuloillaan). 

Itse keskityn kuitenkin BBC:n vuonna 2010 tuottamaan 3-osaiseen minisarjaan, jonka nimi yksinkertaisesti on vain ’Sherlock’. Sherlock on siirretty äärimmäisen onnistuneesti nykypäivän Lontooseen. Olin skeptinen uuden konseptin suhteen, mutta yllätyin todella iloisesti, kun näin sarjan ensimmäisen kerran viime talvena netin välityksellä. Sherlock Holmesia näyttelee Benedict Cumberbatch ja John Watsonia Martin Freeman. (Hauska sattuma, että kummatkin näyttelijät ovat mukana Peter Jacksonin ’Hobitti’ –elokuvissa.) Sherlock on tässäkin versiossa hyvin omapäinen ja eksentrinen ja koska tupakointi on tehty nykypäivänä hyvin vaikeaksi, niin piipun sijasta Sherlock on siirtynyt käyttämään nikotiinilaastareita (paljon).

Juoneltaan jaksot seuraavat melko perinteisen etsiväsarjan kuvioita, mutta kuvaustekniikka, leikkaus, dialogi ja näyttelijät tekevät siitä hyvin omalaatuisen. Sarja on yllättävä, nokkela ja viihdyttävä. <3

Ainoa huono puoli sarjassa on se, että ensimmäinen tuotantokausi oli niin lyhyt. (3 x 1,5h jaksoa.) Onneksi seuraavan kauden pitäisi olla tulossa, koska 3. jakson loppuun jätettiin tietysti suuri cliffhanger.

Sen verran myöhässä olen tämän postaukseni kanssa, että eka kausi näytettiin juuri Yle1:llä nimellä ’Uusi Sherlock’. Löytynee vielä YleAreenalta. Katsokaa!

I wanted to start with Sherlock Holmes. He’s been a popular character lately. First Guy Ritchie directed an action filled movie in 2009, which starred Robert Downey Jr. & Jude Law (sequel is on its way). 

But I’ll focus on even newer production by BBC. 3-part mini series (made in 2010), which is named simply ‘Sherlock’. In this series the world of Sherlock Holmes has been transferred into modern London. Very nicely, I might add. I was quite skeptical about the concept, but I was very happily surprised when I saw the series earlier in the winter. Sherlock Holmes is played by Benedict Cumberbatch and John Watson by Martin Freeman (I don’t know if it’s a co-incidence, but both actors are part of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit movies). Sherlock is very beheaded and eccentric. And because smoking has been made almost impossible Sherlock uses (lots of) nicotine patches instead of smoking pipe.

Plot wise the episodes follow quite traditional detective shows, but the way it’s shot, cut, written and acted makes it truly unique. The show is unpredictable, witty and entertaining. <3

Only con I can think of is that the season was way too short (3 x 1,5hrs.). But I’ve read that second season is on its way. Yay for that ‘cause they left a huge cliffhanger at the end of the 3^rd episode. Find and watch this show!
